PAID WORK-BASED LEARNING EXPERIENCE

REQUIREMENTS FOR PARTCIPATION

16-21 years of age and enrolled in school (generally high school or college).

Have an IEP or 504 plan/be deemed as eligible by the New Jersey Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services (DVRS).

DVRS will conduct an intake to determine eligibility for all participants.

APPLICATION PROCESS

  1. Contact us to begin the application process. We will assist you with completion of the appropriate forms to be submitted to DVRS. Please contact Jennifer Gibbons by email at jgibbons@abilities4work.com or by phone at (856) 848-1025 x164.
  2. DVRS will schedule an intake to determine eligibility for services.
  3. Students who are eligible for DVRS services will receive a DVRS Participant ID# so you can start your program with us. * During your intake with DVRS, request Abilities Solutions! *

INTAKE AND ORIENTATION

  • Intake Record completion with Skills Trainer
  • Discussion of transportation availability/options (for placement purposes)
  • Discussion of technology availability/options (for training options)
  • Discussion of potential need for accommodations
  • Arrange for benefits counseling, if needed/requested
  • Completion of Working Papers, for those under age 18
  • Completion of I-9 and W-4 (so you can get paid!)

BENEFITS OF THE PROGRAM

  • Pre-Training- Job Exploration Counseling, Workplace Readiness Training, Counseling on Post-Secondary Education Opportunities, and Instruction in Self Advocacy.
  • Workplace Clothing and Transportation Support- Support as needed if eligible.
  • Paid Work-Based Learning Experience– 150 hours of paid work at a partnered work site (NJ Minimum Wage)
  • Post-Training– Review of Pre-Training topics and discussion of applicable experiences at the partnered work site.
  • Work "Go" Kit- Students will receive a Work "Go" Kit with useful items in preparation for your next employment endeavor.

EXPECTATIONS OF COACHING AND HOURS

  • It is expected that the student participant will not require extensive coaching to work successfully, but this will depend on the individual and the site employer.
  • Regular check-ins occur from coach to student.
  • Approximately 10 hours per week is expected to be completed at minimum. Hours do not need to be completed consecutively. Hours can stop and start as needed as long as 150 hours are completed.
